QUESTION – How long have you been trading for? What got you into this career profession?

LATOYA SMITH-DEAN: I have been trading for nearly 12 years. When I first started learning about the markets, it was more of a hobby; something to do with my investment club. My investment club had a long -term investment strategy. I was the one who tracked all the stocks and the movements each day. I started to see how lucrative the short-term movements in stocks were, and I decided to open my own broker account. Once My account was open, I was able to take advantage of solar stocks that were making huge percentage moves weekly. I was hooked!

QUESTION – Outside of trading, what strange or unusual habit do you have and enjoy?

LATOYA SMITH-DEAN: Outside of trading. I try to balance family life. I really do not have room for habits. Keeping up with a 4 and 5yr old take a lot of patience and energy.

QUESTION– How would you describe your trading style? How has it evolved over time?

LATOYA SMITH-DEAN: At first I would only focus on Gap Trading. Gap Trading the moves are fast and volatile. Over the past two year, I have developed a basket of stocks to use along with gaps. These stocks are my to go to trades, I look for channels, breakouts or breakdowns. This is different from gap trading because more patience is needed when there is not a sentiment driving the price action.

QUESTION- Outside of trading, how do you enjoy spending your time?

LATOYA SMITH-DEAN: I love to travel! Now that my girls are in school I have to follow their vacation schedule. I travel about 2 times a year, and I like to visit places I never been.

QUESTION– What advice would you give your younger self (both in trading & life)?

LATOYA SMITH-DEAN: In life follow your dreams! I delayed trading full time when I purchased a house based on experience from a realtor. But Real estate was not my passion, I let someone’s experience influence my decision. Ultimately I found my way back to my true calling.

LATOYA SMITH-DEAN: Good advice in trading “If you work hard and study hard you can achieve success” Bad advice , I often hear “you do not training.”

QUESTION- What are your favorite trading & non-trading books to read and why?

LATOYA SMITH-DEAN: I like to read books by Napolean Hill. He is a great author when it comes to self-help, thinking and positively motivating your mind. In trading you are battling yourself. It’s important to know yourself, many new traders or struggling traders have problems succeeding because of “greed” and “fear” That is a part of knowing yourself and learning how to control those emotions within yourself.

QUESTION – When you have lost your mojo or focus (both in trading and life), what do you do to get back on track?

LATOYA SMITH-DEAN: I go back to my purpose, my “why”. In order to succeed and regain focus you need to have a higher purpose.
